The authors investigate the genomic properties of something of an evolutionary anomaly. Wolinella succinogenes is an obligate ruminant bacterial parasite living in a very nutrient rich and homeostatically stable environment. One might therefore reasonably expect it to have only a few transduction systems and a small genome to survive. This organism however, appears to have a huge genome and a large array of transducer systems. The authors quantify these systems and are unable to offer any convincing arguments as to why they have evolved other than the organism may have reverted to this existence from a more demanding environment. It is included in our discussions simply as an illustrative anomaly. This article provided a great deal of the background in terms of the concepts related to the internal structural and functional organisation of the typical cell. It was particularly useful in presenting some of the current concepts relating to transduction mechanisms in overview and many of the specific examples cited were taken from this paper.
