In the interests of clarity and to ensure that a concurrent argument flows throughout this work, I will state my own assumptions on this subject at the outset. The manner in which Althusser and other neo Marxists re interpreted Marx’s work leads me to conclude that they were indeed successful in advancing his main theses. Above all, they made the great mans work relevant in an age that saw the breakdown of much of the practical assumptions on which is work was based, and for this their contribution to the annals of social science shall remain positive.
As I said, the neo Marxists attempted to distance themselves from the traditional economic determinism that often formed the basis on which Marx and Engel’s works’ rested. As such, neo Marxist doctrine invariably adopted a psychological undertone that instead of basing its suppositions on the economic foundations of society, stressed the epistemological approach to conceptualizing the world in which we live. Therefore, Hegel and the Hegelian school in general was an important influence upon their theoretical understanding of society (Anderson, 1976; p.62). Surprisingly, there is only a relatively small amount of Marx’s work that is dedicated to such concerns. Marx himself was strongly influenced by the working class movements of the early nineteenth century and by the widespread revolutions that had rocked Europe in 1848, although the publication of the Communist Manifesto the year before shows that such ideas were already potent within him. Furthermore, the experiences of the working class as seen by Engel’s during his time in England played a vital role in the ideological formation of the two men. It was the economic suppositions these influences spawned that the neo Marxists attempted to redress and primary among these was Althusser.
