Materialism is simply what “a consumer attaches to the worldly possessions” (Belk 1984, p. 291). The possession of goods mainly depends on the values, attitudes, and the traits of the consumer (Belk, 1985). According to Richins and Dawson (1992, p. 307) materialism is ‘‘the importance a person places on possessions and their acquisition as a necessary or desirable form of conduct to reach desired end states, including happiness.’’ Materialism relates to an individual success and when an individual has certain possession, it is believed that they have succeeded in life and they are happy this is because certain possessions are believed to play an important role in an individual life and this determines whether these individuals are satisfied or dissatisfied in life (Chan and Prendergast, 2007). Materialistic individuals are self-centered they care more about the happiness in their life and they mainly purchase products that relate to a certain brand in order to satisfy their demand. These individuals put a lot of emphasis on what they have acquired or what they have more compared to their other life activities (Richins and Dawson, 1992). There are three aspects in the concept of materialism which help us to understand what materialism actually is. Acquisition or possessions are central in the lives of individuals, acquisition plays a great role in the happiness on an individual, and what an individual has determines whether they have succeeded of failed in life (Richins and Dawson, 1992). The increase in the consumption of fashion and luxury goods that are produced by Michael Kors has been supported by the relationship between the consumption of the brand and the concept of materialism. Materialistic individuals are more concerned about their prestigious status and they will always purchase brands that famous among the world’s population. The Michael Kors is a popular brand and being that the worldly possessions of fashion and luxury goods are increasing due to the growth of the materialistic population this has further increased the consumption of this brand.
